Example 7: Finding the Midpoint of the Line Segment
Find the midpoint of the line segment with the endpoints
(7,−2) and
(9,5).
Solution
Use the formula to find the midpoint of the line segment.
(2x1+x2,2y1+y2)=(27+9,2−2+5)=(8,23)
Example 8: Finding the Center of a Circle
The diameter of a circle has endpoints
(−1,−4) and
(5,−4). Find the center of the circle.
Solution
The center of a circle is the center, or midpoint, of its diameter. Thus, the midpoint formula will yield the center point.
(2x1+x2,2y1+y2)(2−1+5,2−4−4)=(24,−28)=(2,−4)
